Covestro provides Shanghai nursing home with efficient polyurethane floor coating technology

Population ageing is becoming an increasingly urgent social issue and a strategic task. Materials manufacturer Covestro is not only committed to developing innovative solutions to cope with various development trends, which includes ageing, but also actively fulfilling corporate social responsibility through its industry expertise. Recently, Covestro and sports flooring manufacturer Jiangmen Changhe Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd. cooperated on providing and installing a brand-new safety flooring for the Shenjiang Nursing Home in Shanghai. The flooring solution provides a healthy and safe environment for the elderly, while also making the nursing house look cozy with the colorful coating decoration.

Shenjiang Nursing Home, located in Jinqiao, Pudong New Area, covers an area of more than 10,000 square meters and has 252 beds. The project included the repainting of the nursing home’s laundry room and outdoor corridor area, where the elderly residents frequently hold activities, requiring the materials to have higher friction coefficient, good mildew and bacteria resistance, as well as scratch resistance and low odor. Additionally, it must minimize the impact on the elderly and employees during the construction period to the lowest.

“Because of nursing home’s particularity, it has very high requirements for floor safety and environmental protection. The solutions provided by Covestro and Changhe Group fully meet these requirements without affecting our daily operations,” said Gu Jieren, President of Shenjiang Nursing Home. “In addition, the colorful and novel design adds a touch of color and fresh vitality to the nursing home.”

The project uses the efficient Pasquick? polyurethane coating technology from Covestro. Pasquick?, a high-performance technology that’s in line with VOC regulation, features a significantly reduced curing time, which allows tight project deadlines to be met and enables a fast return to service. Zhong Xiaobin, Senior Vice President of Business Unit Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties at Covestro Asia Pacific said, “As a fast-curing technology, Pasquick? allowed us to finish construction while minimizing inconvenience for the elderly. Pasquick?-based coating features low odor along with good abrasion resistance and a higher friction coefficient, which all make it an ideal material to provide a safe environment for the elderly to live in.”

Pasquick? has already been used in the parking lot of Beijing Daxing International Airport and other key national projects. Additionally, the Pasquick? permeable flooring solution is a part of the "sponge city" concept, which plays a vital role in solving urban water logging, rainwater storage, and other problems. For this reason, Covestro recently won the "Social Innovation Leadership" award at the 2019 Sustainable Business Awards by the European Chamber of Commerce in China.
